so i feel like i should write some things about my darling ocs; some species traits!
elementals are people who basically broke off from the main body of homo sapiens when they first started defining themselves from whatever people were previously. these people decided to go back to nature, and to do things more in accordance to it, rather than to make tools and stuff. this led to them developping a very high affinity with nature, and a good understanding of it, which eventually evolved into being able to get nature to do what they want.
nowadays, most elementals live on a series of islands that humans cannot enter, or even see. the islands have various biomes, and exist in a long vertical string in the atlantic ocean. they have been a safe haven for all endangered organisms, and there are even some plants and animals who were brought to extinction due to humans hiding out there.
elementals are highly medically advanced, and have have found cures to even the most problematic diseases. long ago, they tweaked the human genetic code to be equipped with a kind of potentiality of element affinity, so humans can give birth to elementals if they have enough elemental blood in them. elementalism is a recessive trait, but they’ve been around for long enough that every human has a bit of elemental in them.
elementals live much longer than humans. the higher-order elementals can live up to about 300 years, and the top two classes can live for 500. the lower classes live anywhere from 150 to 250 years. Because of this, elementals do not mate for life, although they are fiercely loyal to their chosen one. if an elemental’s love is unrequitted, they will pine for up to five years before moving on. relationships between elementals generally last around fifty years, and there are no hard feelings when it is time to find someone new. elementals stay close friends after their relationships are over. if they end up taking a human as a partner, they generally stay with that human the end of their natural life. since humans take care of the bulk of elemental procreation, there has never been any prejudice against homosexuality and the queer community, and the percentages of queer people among elementals is much higher than among humans.
elementals are terrible at academics, as they tend to have poor eyesight, and worse memories. they also have trouble concentrating on things that do not seem important, and have trouble grasping abstract concepts. however, they are very intelligent, and have quick minds and good problem-solving skills.
elementals sometimes have trouble interacting with humans, as there are some prominent emotional differences. elementals tend to not have much of a sense of shame, and are not as emotionally sensitive as humans are. their emotions in general are not as vibrant or strong. ties among friends and family, however, are much stronger than they are among humans, and elemenals have easier times making friends.
elementals have a natural aversion to unnatural materials. and cannot keep down processed food, which is highly problematic for elementals whose families are who are not very well-off. the higher-order elementals cannot even dye their hair; the color washes off immediately, and bleach fades away in about a week. elementals have an extremely low tolerance to alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, and immediately feel ill then internalizing any of these substances.
elemental powers generally include the following:
-communication with animals who have charisteristics of your element (the higher-order elementals have more animals with whom they can communicate than lower-order ones)
-communications with whatever makes up your element, and the manipulation of atoms that make up your element (like being able to play with hydrogen and oxygen if you’re a water elemental, and being able to try to get ice and water to do your bidding)
-a second body (higher-order elementals only only. these second bodies have the shape of an animal, generally carnivorous in nature. these bodies kind of swap with the body of the elemental at their bidding, and can happen in increments (like swapping out a nose for heightened sense of smell). these bodies will also swap with a higher-order elemental if they are killed prematurely. they are trapped in that animal body for a year, until their original body is fully repaired and functional. if they are killed within that year, they stay dead.)
-the ability to give elementary protection to others (a blessing from a water elemental protects you from drowning, etc.)
the different classes of elementals are as follows:
lower order elementals:
-shapeshifters (they have the ability to transform their bodies into any form they have seen before. this includes animals, and the changing of their humanoid appearance)
-psychics (they can sense emotions and read thoughts, though it takes a lot of training to control this power. they also can control minds and bodies to some extent, and can manipulate memories.)
-medics (they are able to communicate directly with living bodies, which allows them to cure disease, and treat injuries. this power can also be used offensively)
-sensory elementals (sight (the power to make illusions), smell (production and control of gasses), touch (stimulating the nerves from afar), hearing (echolocation, throwing sounds, blowing up peoples’ brains with the right frequency and volume), taste (rare, the power of taste is generally also found in smell elementals. taste elementals do not have many powers, but are very good at cooking. they are also make exquisite poisons.))
-electricity elementals (good at mechanics, and can control lightning and electricity)
-teleportation elementals (mostly not used for battle, but can zap targets to anywhere they know enough about, so tend to have a good head for geography.)
-the bright and shadow lackeys (have a fraction of the powers the bright or shadow elemental they serve has)
higher order elementals:
-bright and shadow (there is only one of each these alive in the world at a time, unless it is a succession period, in which there is an old one and a young one, and the old trains the young. they have control over the natural laws, and can bend them at will. shadow elementals also have communications with the dead, and acidic saliva. during the succession period, bright and shadow elementals can sense each others’ existence)
-earth (control of plants and dirt and rocks and such. can make plants grow vey quickly, and can make plant hybrids. can melt into trees, and photosynthesize)
-water (can control water, and freeze/thaw it at will, as well as pull it out of the air. they also can breathe underwater becasue they have an organ that separates the hydrogen from the oxygen before it enters their lungs)
-air (can control any element that the earth’s atmosphere is made of. can also fly, and run very quickly. have very good aim)
-fire (can control heat and flame. tend to ignite bits of themselves when angry, and cannot hold their breath for very long.)
air, earth, fire, and water elementals are very rare, and there are generally only one of each kind born on a continent in a generation.
an elemental’s element bestows them with certain characteristics, including, but not limited to:
-pigmentation of the eyes
-strengths/weaknesses (such as the arts, sensitivity to temperature, etc.)
elementalism in human-born elementals gradually manifests itself during puberty, giving them enough time to get things under control. they generally migrate to the haven after they reach maturity. haven-born elementals exhibit signs of elementalism from infancy, and have to attend special classes to learn how to control their powers.
humans can be born to elementals, so there is a good-sized community of humans in the elemental haven, who, once they become adults, can choose to go to human civilization and live with their kind, or do various jobs in the haven, generally things like architecture, technological maintenance and developpment, childcare, and housekeeping chores like cooking, cleaning, and gardening.
human-born elementals are scouted by shapeshifters deployed to every corner of human civilization. these young elementals are led to the haven by these shapeshifters, with long stretches on foot. sometimes, if they live far enough away, the teleportation elementals back at the haven will help them along. the bright elemental generally bestows the roaming groups of shapeshifters timeslides, so there aren’t any missing-children ruckuses.
at some point in time, a long time ago, shadow elemenals broke off from the rest of the elementals, with the beleif that humans need constant strife in order to acheive much of anything, and devote their lives to making life harder for the humans. they also try to recruit young elementals to follow their ways, but a smaller force seceded with the first radical shadow elemental, so they remain largely outnumbered. the current shadow elemental recruits men and women from prisons for her cause, and has a veritable army of criminals living in her base on an island shielded from the view of unauthorized humans.
the other elementals are at perpetual war against the shadow elementals and their followers, and, during the succession period, attempt to prevent the new shadow elemental from aligning the previous one. this has not once worked.
